The Success Of Air Jordan And How It Is Born
The Air Jordan sneaker was certainly not the first basketball shoe ever made, neither was it even the most technologically advanced sports shoe made for the basketball court at the time it was introduced. It was not even the first basketball sneakers produced by Nike, but it turned out to be a game changer that redefined the industry of luxury basketball sneakers.
The very first original Air Jordan was the Air Jordan 1. This classic was released to the public market in 1985. It was however not the first time it had been seen in public as legendary basketball player, Michael Jordan himself first wore the Air Jordan 1 while playing for Chicago Bulls as a rookie.
1984 was Michael Jordan’s year as he won the national basketball title and an Olympic gold. This was the year he got drafted to Chicago Bulls and was also the same year he got endorsed by Nike in a five-year contract worth a whooping $2.5 million, which was considered extravagant by many for Jordan who was then just a rookie.
In 1985, Nike started producing a line of sneakers called the Air Jordan, which were the most expensive basketball sneakers at that time. The marketing gamble, if it could be said to be a gamble paid off as Air Jordan 1 was an instant success and it recorded over $130 million worth of sales it its first year alone. Since then many subsequent editions and models have been released by Nike under the Air Jordan product line, with each being a marketing success.
The unique designs, flashy colors, brilliant marketing and success of Michael Jordan on the basketball court all contributed to the success of Air Jordan sneakers. And even though Michael Jordan retired way back in 2003, Air Jordan sneakers continue to be widely sought after and worn by everyone who appreciates quality.
