New Air Jordan 5 “Doernbecher” Release Date Unveiled
More than just a shoe, Nike unveiled the new Air Jordan 5 “Doernbecher” sneakers. The limited edition Air Jordans are part of a series of sneakers designed by young patients from the Doernbecher Children’s Hospital. The latest Air Jordan Doernbecher sneaker was designed by 12 year old Isaac Arzate, who passed away in April 2012.
The sneaker pays homage to Isaac and his family, and represents the things that mattered most to him in his young life, including his love for playing basketball, baseball and videogames.
The design features Isaac’s basketball number 31 on the right shoe and his baseball jersey number 9 on the left shoe. The dates of his birth and passing are featured on the inside of the tongue, and the upper are covered with words from a poem Isaac wrote the day before he passed away.
Parts of the Air Jordan 5 “Doernbecher” shoes glow in the dark, including the outsole, laces, eyelets, logo branding and Airbag units. The wording on the upper are also made of black light ink and each shoe comes with a special flashlight to complete the effect.
The Air Jordan 5 “Doernbecher” will release in limited quantities on September 14th for $180 USD. They’ll be released at select Nike retail locations and also online at Nike.com. All proceeds will benefit the OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.
Nike will also unveil the 2013 10th Anniversary Collection of Doernbecher Freestyle on Saturday, September 28th. Stay tuned for more information.
