Nike Air Force 1 Sneakers
Without a doubt one of Nike’s most iconic shoes are the Nike Air Force sneakers, now known as the Nike Air Force 1 (or AF1). Designed by Bruce Kilgore and first released in 1982, it was the first Nike shoe that featured Nike Air technology. More than 30 years after its release, the legend still lives on.
The shoes were named after the aircraft that carries the U.S. President, the Air Force One. The new Air technology was revolutionizing back in the day raising the standard in sneaker comfort. Nike Air units inside the soles reduced the forces of impact with every step, and the cushioning around the collar prevented heel slip and extra comfort fittings.
The classic models are sold in three different styles, low, mid and high featuring premium leather uppers. The Nike Air Force 1 High-top sneakers come with a velcro strap which is movable and removable on some versions. The Nike Air Force 1 Mid comes with a connected strap which is secured to the shoe. The Low-tops do not come with a strap.
The beloved style of the original silhouette sports thick rubber soles and crown-shaped vamp perforations on the toe box. Another notable trademark of the Nike Air Force 1 shoes, are the rectangular metal dubrés or tags on the bottom of the laces, with “AF-1 ’82” inscribed that honors the shoe’s debut year.
Over the years the Nike Air Force 1 has seen many different colors and color schemes, but the most common Air Force 1’s sold are the solid white and solid black colorways. Different versions and upgraded models have been made, from the heavy all-weather protection duckboots to the lighter Air Force 1s with hyperfuse uppers or lunarlon soles. Many different styles, prints and materials have been sporting the classic silhouette as well, from patent and suede leather to exotic and woven materials, you name it.
As a performance shoe, the AF1 is still used for street play as well as for professional play, but has nowadays become more of a fashion statement. The Nike Air Force 1 has become a favorite among celebrities and sneaker collectors and for good reason. It is the ultimate classic Nike shoe bringing comfort, fit and durability. A classic style that you will see for many years to come.
